Sailor Made Ropeworks...

Welcome to Sailor Made Ropeworks! My name is Tim. After a wonderful career in the United States Merchant Marines, I've learned quite a few things about rope-work and its overall importance. From line splicing to Rope Fenders, Monkey Fists and Woggle Rugs (sailor/ocean plaits), there was never a dull moment. I will always give full credit to the man who took me under his wing and taught me how to be the very best rope worker around; his name is Joe Olson (Bosun of the CS Global Sentinel). Because of Joe Olson, I not only learned rope-work but fell in love with it! After all these years, I still love rope-work! Thank you Joe!

Carrick is the Gaelic word for "rock". The name Carrick is believed to come from the word "Carrack" which would have been a three to four mast merchant vessel used in the late 14th and into the 15th centuries. The knot itself (Carrick Bend) is believed to have been fashioned from a medieval Gaelic breast plate and has become one of the most beloved rope-work designs of all time (one of my favorites for sure).

Woggle Rugs (Sailor/Ocean Plaits/Mats)...

Woggle Rugs
(aka sailor/ocean plaits/mats):

Woggle Rugs (aka sailor/ocean plaits/mats), were used
many years ago to place cargo boxes on. The rug was made with
3-5" line and were much bigger. The rug supplied a cushion and stability for the cargo but it also supplied air flow and absorbed humidity underneath the
cargo allowing the cargo to stay fresher and drier longer.
The captain then got the idea in his head that a smaller version
of the rug would make a great boot mat, so the boot/shoe mat
was invented using what would have been 1/4" - 1/2" line.

Bosun's (Kringle) Mat...

Bosun's (Kringle) Mat:

Modeled after the Scandinavian pretzel shaped pastry, the Kringle or Bosun's Mat was used to impress the Admirals in the late 1890's through the late 1930's.

The Bosun's Mat would have originally been made with natural fiber line such as Hemp or Manila and the ships excess mooring line would have been flemished (pictured below) on top of the mat.

French chemist by the name of Count Hilaire de Chardonnet  invented the first synthetic rope known as Rayon or "Artificial Silk" which would change the face of rope forever! It wasn't until late 1931 that a man named Wallace Carothers invented the "Miracle Fiber" known as nylon (still the favorite and most widely used rope today)

Rope Fenders...

Rope Fenders:

Rope fenders (bumpers) are used to protect the side of a vessel beside a dock or another vessel. Unfortunately, rope fenders have become a thing of the past and replaced with inflatable rubber fenders. My Rope Fenders are incredibly durable and will take you back in time. They scream Nautical!  Not only will they last (seemingly forever) but they will look great on your boat or as a nautical landscape theme (indoorsoutdoors, home or office).
