Monkey Fists...

Monkey Fists:

A Monkey Fist is a tool attached to a heaving line and thrown from the ship to the Longshoreman waiting on the dock. Once the Longshoreman has the Heaving Line, he then pulls the Heaving Line which is attached to the hawser (mooring or tie-up) line to the dock for the ships tie up to the Cleat or Bollard.
On the Great Lakes, deckhands become the Longshoremen and are lowered to the dock (from the ship) by way of a Bosun's Chair. Once the deckhand lands on the dock (keep in mind the ship is moving), he is then thrown the heaving line (attached to a metal mooring cable) where he then places the steel mooring cable over the Spile (Bollard) where the slack is then taken up by the ships powerful tension winches.

The above photos are an example of how Monkey Fists
can be used for decorative purposes.

The Monkey Fists pictured above are more for decorative
purposes and are made with 1/2" Line with a baseball core.

The Survival Fist is one of the most unique and yet important
of all Monkey Fists. This particular Fist is a combination Monkey Fist and Solomon bar (cobra knot) and would be used on a lifeboat
as a Survival Tool. If a sailor on a lifeboat were to fall overboard,
you would take the Survival Fist, pull out the bitter ends, cleat off the line
on the lifeboat and throw the fist to the overboard sailor a reel him in
(the Survival Fist can be thrown much further than a life ring).
Made with 1/4Manila Line with a golf ball core,
this Monkey Fist is appx. 15" long from the bottom of the Fist
to the top of the eye and is ready for use on you boat
or a nautical conversation piece.
$45.00ea (2 for $80.00).
